Claudio Villa

Claudio Villa (1926–1987) was one of Italy’s most iconic and passionate tenors, affectionately known as "Il Reuccio" (“The Little King”). With a voice that blended operatic power with emotional intensity, Villa became a defining figure in postwar Italian music, recording over 3,000 songs and performing across Europe and the Americas.

In a personal conversation with the author of this blog post, a close friend, Villa revealed that he had studied under Mario Lanza, the celebrated Italian-American tenor and film star. Once, when that same friend played one of Lanza’s records, Villa spontaneously began to sing over it—matching the voice, phrasing, and style so precisely that it was almost impossible to distinguish the two. The moment reflected both his deep admiration for Lanza and his own extraordinary vocal control.

Villa’s style, shaped by this influence, brought operatic beauty to the Italian canzone. He became a towering figure at the Sanremo Music Festival, where he won a record four times (1955, 1957, 1962, and 1967). His duet with Domenico Modugno, “Addio... addio,” remains one of Sanremo’s most emotional performances. Songs like “Granada,” “Ti Voglio Come Sei,” and “Non ti scordar di me” became staples of 20th-century Italian music.
