This vintage French movie poster features La Dolce Vita, Federico Fellini’s celebrated 1960 masterpiece. Translated as “The Sweet Life,” the film is widely recognized as a landmark of world cinema and a defining example of Italian neorealism and art house filmmaking.
The story follows Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), a journalist immersed in Rome’s glamorous tabloid scene. As he chronicles the indulgent lives of celebrities and socialites, Marcello drifts through a series of episodic encounters—each offering glimpses into fame, love, and existential longing. Among the film’s many memorable characters is Sylvia (Anita Ekberg), a captivating American actress whose iconic scene in the Trevi Fountain has become one of the most famous moments in cinematic history.

La Dolce Vita explores themes of excess, disillusionment, and the search for meaning amid the allure of modern life. Through Marcello’s journey, Fellini examines the spiritual emptiness behind the façade of wealth and fame, offering a poignant critique of contemporary society.
Fellini’s visionary direction, paired with Otello Martelli’s elegant black-and-white cinematography and Nino Rota’s unforgettable score, gives the film its rich, dreamlike quality. Long takes, surreal imagery, and fluid camera work contribute to its timeless aesthetic.

Awarded the Palme d’Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, La Dolce Vita continues to be studied, referenced, and revered. Its visual poetry and emotional depth have made it a cornerstone of international cinema, reflecting both the beauty and the hollowness of “the sweet life.”
